Fish Magnet

I generally eschew explanations that reduce to "good luck" or "bad luck." Having said that, however, I must confess that the longer I fish, the more I think some people couldn't catch a starving fish in a bucket while other people can't help but catch fish after fish for no apparent reason. My older son, Calvin, falls in the latter category. This kid simply outfishes anyone in the boat, any day, all day. Tonight, we see him posing with another sample of last night's teaser.

Calvin poses with a fine example of Centropomus Undecimalis, or the common snook:

Calvin caught several large snook tonight. But he not only catches big fish, he catches variety. Here we see Calvin with another of tonight's species, the sheepshead (archosargus probatocephalus):

Check out the teeth on this thing!

Snook season is closed, so we have put back all the snook we've caught.

The sheepshead was legal size (minimum size is 12", the sheepshead pictured was 14". We cut him loose, too, because we had a half a dozen steaks ready to go on the grill and I didn't feel like cleaning one fish just for myself. Sheepshead is a most delicious fish because they eat crustaceans. Snook, too, is delicious.

As the person who sat next to Alderman McLendon during the last campaign forum’s listening to his every word, I would like to offer constructive comments about the Alderman and what is best for Franklin's future. I would like to offer the following:

The reason I ran for Alderman was two-fold. First, Alderman McLendon had been Chairman of the committee that oversees the Water Department. This department has problems that were related to structural management issues in city government. The city was giving us, with the help of The Tennessean, a coverup of “shuck and jive” that really irritated me. Second, we have troops making the supreme sacrifice overseas so people can run for office and vote. So I found it unacceptable to have only one candidate on the ballot for the Second Ward.

I got some of the results I was after. Alderman McLendon is looking at the management issue and has asked the city attorney to draft a "self-reporting" system for city employees. This is the system used by the Bar Association for Lawyers. Based on conversations with Alderman McLendon I know he will be reading reports with an eye towards "reading between the lines." I was hoping by now he would have asked to read some of my management books, but maybe he has purchased his own copies. Most city functions are businesses that need good management.

I think the problem with the position of mayor is there is too little pay for a part-time gig for a Businessman/Lawyer/Mercenary like Alderman McLendon to consider running. However, I think as a full-time mayor with a decent pay check, Mr. McLendon would do a great job and could grow into a Mayor that will make us all proud to say we voted for him. Mr. Mercenary (his own words to me) what’s it going to take? Name your price!

My campaign did not receive the financial support I had anticipated. If you appreciate the effort I made to improve city government please send a campaign donation to help offset the cost of signs, printing and advertising. Please send contributions to:

Amy does not clean or eat fish. She will catch them, and sometimes even take them off the hook. She does not like fishing at night or in the open ocean, so that limits her fishing opportunities. We'll see if we can get the fairest member of our crew with a fish soon, though.
